MICKEY MANTELMy book report is on Mickey Mantel. He was born in
Spavinaw, OklahomaHe is a very famous baseball player. He got in the Hall of Fame because he hit 536 home runs in one season.Is Mickey Mantel alive?  No he is dead. He died in the year of 1995. He died in
Dallas, Texas. He died 12 years after he retired.Mickey Mantel played first, second, third, and shortstop. Mickey Mantel is in the shortstop section in the Hall of Fame. I choose Mickey Mantel because he played baseball for the Yankees.  Another reason I choose Mickey Mantle is because I love baseball just like him.I used a book called World Book 2000, plus a few websites like Ynkeestars.com and answers.com plus wikipedia.com.  

Land Run.  My report is on the land run. In the late 1800s, the US government allowed settlers into the unassigned lands. The government held land runs there. The first land run began at noon on April 22, 1889. About 50,000 people took part in the land run. In one day Guthrie, Oklahoma City, Stillwater, and
Norman became cities. All of this happened in the southwest region of the U.S.  The cause of the land run was for free land. The effect of the land run was people got free land. By the end of April 22, both
Oklahoma City and Guthrie had established cities of around 10,000 people in literally half day.  As Harpers Weekly put it, “Unlike Rome, the city of Guthrie was built in a day.” To be striclty accurate in the mater it might be said that it was built in an afternoon. At twelve o’ clock on Monday April 22nd, the resident population of Guthrie was nothing. Before sundown if was at least ten thousand. I choose this topic because it first day and month was my birthday.   

                        Ron Howard   My report is on Ron Howard and he is still living. He is famous because he is a movie star. He was from Duncan, Oklahoma. 5 interesting facts are that he played in Eat My Dust, Andy Griffin, Nice Guy, Happy Days, and Nice Person. I chose this person because when I was 5 years old, I went to Hollywood and when I was walking down the sidewalk I saw pictures of him on a building him as a kid to adult. In one picture he was 10 years old and the other he was almost 40 years old. They are great pictures they are cool!! I found the pictures on the internet, IMDB, and Google.  He played a lot of shows/movies like Andy Griffith Show and he was Opie. His character is funny and sometimes crazy. His birthday is March 1, 1954. He was in almost 100 shows. He got awards for his shows and movies. He moved behind the camera and directed Through the Magic Pyramid and Skyward.  He became a full-time executive producer-director in 1980. In1982, Howard directed Night Shift. The film starred Happy Days co-star Henry Winker. 

“Sequoyah”

            This report is about one of the most famous Indians in history.  His name is Sequoyah and he was born in 1776 in Tuskeegee, Tennessee.  He belonged to the Cherokee Indian tribe that lived in North Carolina and Tennessee around the Smoky Mountains.  This is the same Indian tribe that my great, great grandmother belonged to and that I belong to today.               To the Americans, he was known as George Gist.  To the Indians, he was known as Sequoyah meaning pig’s foot.  He was named so most likely due to a childhood injury to his leg.  His father was a
Virginia fur trader named Nathaniel Gist who left his mother before he was born.  His mother was the daughter of a Cherokee chief and raised Sequoyah on her own.  Sequoyah eventually married and had a daughter named Ahyoka.  The two were very close and believed in the dream of one day having an alphabet that all the Indians could learn.  This alphabet would be the greatest thing he was known for and would change the way the Indians communicated from that day forward.          

Sequoyah left Tennessee as a young boy because there were many white men that were moving into the territory.  He went to Georgia where he worked as a silversmith making jewelry.  One of the men that purchased a piece of his jewelry suggested that he begin to sign his work like a painter would sign his painting.  Since Sequoyah did not know how to write, he went to a wealthy farmer who showed him how to spell his name in English.  This was the first thing that got him thinking about a writing system for the Cherokee Indians.           

Sequoyah enlisted in the United States military to fight against the British and the Creek Indians in the war of 1812.  Because most of the Indians could not read or write the English language, they were not able to write letters to home or read any military documents.  It was during his time in the military that he truly realized the need for a language that the Indians could use to communicate among themselves.            Sequoyah’s daughter, Ahyoka, was an important person in helping him develop the Cherokee alphabet.  The two of them left their home together and traveled westward into the
Arkansas territory.  This was before Arkansas actually became a state and was stilled called a territory.  It was there that he completed his work on the Cherokee alphabet which was made up of 86 symbols.  These symbols could be put together to form words that would allow the Indians to tell stories and record important events.  They allowed the Cherokee Indians to learn to read and write and communicate among themselves.          In 1821, Sequoyah presented his alphabet to the Cherokee leaders who quickly adopted it as the official written language of the Cherokee tribe.  In 1828, he moved with the tribe to the Oklahoma territory where he made is home.  It was also in 1828 that the first Native American newspaper was published in the new Cherokee language.  Eventually, the Holy Bible was also translated into the Cherokee language.  Without Sequoyah’s alphabet, these things would not have been possible and many Indians would never have learned to read.        

  Sequoyah became active in the politics of his tribe and was even sent to Washington on to appear on the Cherokee tribe’s behalf.  In 1841, he retired and headed into a part of Mexico that is known today as
Texas.  It was in Mexico that he became ill and died in 1843.            

I chose Sequoyah because my grandmother and grandfather know a lot about him.  I started learning about Sequoyah after writing my character dress report about his daughter, Ahyoka.  I also thought it would be interesting to learn about another Indian from the same Indian tribe as my mom and me.          A lot of the information in this book report came from different internet sites.  I used four different internet sites to learn about Sequoyah.  I also used three books from the library.  They were Sequoyah, the Cherokee Who Captured Words, Sequoyah, Leader of the Cherokees and The Story of Sequoyah.                                       

Frank Phillips 

I researched Frank Philips for my report. He is not alive today he died in 1950 from a heart attack. He was born in 1873. He is from the Cherokee Nation. He married a woman named Jane Gibson. He’s famous because he has his own oil refinery. He was the person who stopped the hunting of the buffalo. He won the award for owning the most land when lived in
Oklahoma. He was a very generous man who gave people food and supplies. He once owned 200 bison or buffalo but when he died someone took them.He owned 200 acres of land that is now Woolaroc. I chose this person because I think he is cool and because we are going there for a field trip. I used the internet to find out the stuff about him. And I used books like the Woolaroc Story and I used the internet in the library. I think he is an awesome person.

My book report is on the Creek Indians.  The tribe lived near rivers and creeks.  The states they lived in were South Carolina, Alabama, and Georgia.        What my tribe ate was fish, deer, bears, squirrels, birds, and rabbits.  Some Creek Indians were hunters, gatherers, and farmers. 

       A famous Creek person was Joy Harjo.  She was a writer, a singer, and a great great grandmother.  My school’s founder, Alice Robertson, was also a Creek Indian.         In Creek County, Creek women teach their grandchildren how to make a tradition basket.         The one thing I liked about the Creek tribe is how they discuss their problems. 

       I chose the Creek Indians because I thought they were interesting to me.        I did my research from a Junior Classroom Atlas and a book about Creek Indians.

I am writing a report on Will Rogers and it contains information like what tribe he is from or how he died, of course it also has many more information so I hope you enjoy it as much as I did writing it.                       

            Will Rogers died on a plane crash in an Alaskan lagoon on 1955.The world was shocked at the loss of their favorite comedian, they thought it was like losing a brother or a friend, although he died, it seemed fitting that he died doing the thing he loved. 

        Will
Rogers was a very famous comedian, the world loved his funny jokes or when he played a role in a movie, Will Rogers was considered to many people a funny-man.        Will
Rogers was in the Cherokee tribe and they called him the “Cherokee-kid’’ I do not know how he responded to it or how it effected him with that name, but the Cherokee tribe is a very large and important tribe                                                                                                                                                                         

MARIA TALLCHIEF  

My report is on Maria Tallchief.  She is still living.  She is 90 years old.  She is a ballerina.  Maria Tallchief is from the Osage tribe.  The Osage tribe was located in
Fairfax, Oklahoma, which is in the Southwest region.  Maria Tallchief attended every performance of the Ballet Russe.  She spoke to her mother and father and they agreed to let her go to
New York.  She said that her first simple exercises were like the frame of a house before it is built.  She felt that Oklahoma was not going to give her the education she needed, so she went to
New York.  I chose this person because she is a famous ballerina.

The Choctaw Tribe I’m doing my book report on Choctaw tribe. The live in Alabama and
Mississippi. They came from the Northeast. They lived in cabins. The cabins were held together by strips of vines and cane.  

They made different types of crafts such, as: tomahawks             and paintings. They ate corn, fish, game and beans. Their life was rough. They had to do everything by themselves. The winters were harsh.  Cyrus Boynton and Alfred Wright made the Choctaw alphabet. The Choctaw walked the Trail of Tears. They are part of the Five Civilized Tribes. The five tribes are Chickasaw, Creek, Seminole, Choctaw, and Cherokee. The reason I chose the Choctaw Tribe for my book report was because I didn’t know much about them and I wanted to know more. What I used to get my information was a book called “A New True Book: The Choctaw” and the internet.

Mickey Mantel 

My report is on Mickey Mantel, he is a famous baseball player. No he is not alive. He died in 1995. He is famous because he has won 3 American League M. V. P. He is from
Oklahoma. He played on 12 pennant winners. He is in the hall of fame. He has played on the Red Sox and the Yankees. When he was 4 years old, the family moved to the town called Commerce. He played football too. I choose this person because I like baseball and I wanted to learn about people who played baseball. I used the internet and after I found out what I wanted I printed the stuff out and I had to read it. It was six pages. If I was a famous baseball player, I would like too be just like him because he was famous and a good baseball player. He is a Christian and I am a Christian too. So that is another reason why I picked him.
